Paraguay president impeached and under house arrest following bank collapse scandal
Paraguay's Senate voted 44 to 45 to impeach President Santiago Peña on Friday, and Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in as his successor soon after. Peña had announced his resignation the day before, after Ueno Bank was shut down overnight in a solvency crisis that left millions of customers unable to reach their money. Attorney General Emiliano Rolón Fernández opened three criminal cases against Peña and other former officials, and impeachment strips the former president of his parliamentary immunity; he remains under house arrest while a judge decides where he stays during the process. Ueno Bank served 2.9 million customers in a country of 6.1 million, and the Central Bank found its solvency ratio had fallen below half the required minimum, while the bank held millions in public funds, including workers' pension money.
