Delhi Air Quality Worsens Ahead Of Diwali As Firework Restrictions Enter Force

Delhi's air quality has deteriorated to the 'very poor' category ahead of Diwali, with the city's air quality index reaching 377 on Wednesday morning. The worsening smog arrives just as restrictions on fireworks come into force, a measure aimed at limiting the extra pollution the festival celebrations typically bring. Diwali fireworks are a major seasonal source of smoke and particulate matter in the capital, compounding vehicle exhaust, construction dust and crop burning. Residents face hazy skies and health risks from prolonged exposure, and authorities are watching whether the curbs keep the festival period from pushing pollution even higher.
